Creative Engineering Project
Intro:
In this project, our Stem class picked a problem in the world and tried to solve it using engineering. Our class expanded our horizons and came up with many different things. My group formed around an interest in gang violence. After researching about gangs, we figured out that gun violence was the second most committed crime by gangs. This was the problem we were going to try and solve. Our final idea was a GPS chip, which would be installed into the safety mechanism of the gun once it is produced. This would allow law enforcement to track down where a firearm was fired as well as track the suspect if they still have the gun on them. If the GPS was removed, it would permanently enable the safety mechanism rendering the gun useless. Theoretically, it would work great.
Concepts:
We made this prototype using the Engineering Design Cycle:
1. Identify the need 1. We chose gang activity as our need
2. Research the problem 2. We researched guns, gangs, gun violence and statistics
3. Develop possible solutions 3. We conjured up the tracking device idea
4. Select the most promising solution 4. We chose the tracking idea/Gps
5. Construct a prototype 5. Using 123design, we created a virtual prototype
6. Test and evaluate the prototype 6. We evaluated the design on the program
7. Communicate the design 7. We created a presentation and we pitched our idea to the class
8. Redesign 8. We redesigned our model throughout the 5 weeks
Finished product:

Conclusion:
This was a great project to be a part of with my group. We all worked great together and had no conflict. We finished in a good amount of time and had a cool presentation and video to show to the class. Three things that went very well were cooperating with my group, communicating between group members, and making a great finished product. However, there was some things we could have done better. We could have focused more on our work. This led to distractions and procrastination. Other than getting off task a couple of times, I had a great time on this project and a great time with my group.
